Covering the back of the seat adds a tailored look to the dining chair.
Designer Mimi Basseri shares ideas for updating drab or worn out dining chairs with fun and easy no-sew covers.

Simple Skirt

Materials:

measuring tape
paper for pattern
fabric
scissors
plate
fusible webbing
iron
ribbon
safety pin or needle and thread

Steps:

  1. Take two measurements of the chair seat: side to side, and front to back.

  2. Next measure the desired drop (usually around five inches), and add this amount to the length and width measurements for the seat.

  3. Make a paper pattern with these dimensions. Mark the actual front corners (seat width and length without the drop) with a little "x" on the pattern. On the back, mark where the ties will go by measuring where the chair backs occur. You can reuse this pattern to create different covers for various seasons.

  4. Using the pattern, cut out fabric of choice. Use the side of a plate as a guide to create a pretty rounded corner.

  5. Hem around the edges with fusible webbing. Simply turn under about 1/2 inch fabric and iron it flat. Secure with fusible webbing.

  6. Attach the ribbon on the outside of the chair. It can be secured with a safety pin, or you could sew it in place.

  • Tie the ribbons in the front of the chair, making a neat little pleat at the corner (see photo at right). Tie the back ribbons around the upright seat back. The ties in the front are for show, while the ones in the back hold the cover in place.

Tailored Variation of the Simple Skirt

    Steps:

    1. Measure front to back of the seat, adding the desired length of the drop to the length, just as for chair above. Measure the width of the chair. Do not include the drop length on the width measurement. Create a paper pattern using these measurements

    2. Turn under half-inch hem all around and fuse into place.

    3. Cut a rectangle for the side drop. This should be the length of the seat and the width of the drop. Attach to the first piece at the sides. Fold back the hem edges and fuse into place.

    4. Add ribbons as for the cover above, and tie the cover into place.

    5. For the chair-back cover, measure the length you want for the drop and double it.

    6. Cut out a rectangle of fabric (check to make sure the pattern runs vertically, so it will read properly when draped on the chair back) using the doubled drop length and the chair's width.

    7. Hem with fusible webbing around all the edges.

    8. Attach ribbons to the bottom cover and back cover. Tie into place.
