TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-748 -- More Projects »
Floral designer Ardith Beveridge provides tips for creating floral arrangements with cut flowers.

Figure A
There are four types of flowers that go into a typical arrangement (figure A). First are the line flowers such as pussy willows that are straight and have blooms on all sides of the stem. Mass flowers are round, while form flowers are shapes other than round, such as an iris. Filler flowers are fluffy, with little bunches of flowers. Include all these flowers plus some greenery for a well-balanced arrangement.

Steps:

  1. Start by filling your vase with clean warm water with a little floral food or preservative.

  2. Cut the ends off of each flower stem at an angle.

  • Begin by placing two line flowers at the north and south positions in the vase, crisscrossing the bottoms of the stems (figure B).

  • Cut the next two more line flowers stems a touch shorter and place these at the east and west locations in the vase (figure C).

  • Next add round flowers, using the same technique (figure D). Place the filler in the middle to fill out the arrangement.

  • As you work, be sure to clean off all the stems. Do not leave any leaves or foliage on the parts of the stems that will be below the waterline in the vase.
