Rigid packaging materials can be transformed into an unusual mirror frame like this one.
Creativity expert Carol Tanzi demonstrates how to recycle discarded polystyrene* packaging and other materials to make a mirror frame.

* polystyrene--A rigid, clear thermoplastic polymer that can be molded into objects or made into a foam that is used to insulate refrigerators.

Mirror Frame

Materials:

piece of polystyrene
white glue
tissue paper
1" paintbrush
natural sponge
acrylic craft paint
hot-glue gun
adornments such as seashells, buttons and pearls
silicon glue
quick hangers

Steps:

  1. Cut the center bar from a piece of polystyrene to create a single large opening (figure A).

  2. Dilute white glue with a little water, then wad up small (three to four inches) pieces of tissue paper and spread them out.

  • Use the paintbrush to paint glue onto the polystyrene, spread crinkled tissue paper over it (figure B), and cover with another coat of glue. Let dry completely.

  • Paint with a natural sponge, layering the colors (figure C). Acrylic craft paint works well.

  • After the paint dries, use a glue gun to attach adornments around the edge.

  • Affix the mirror with silicon glue to the backside.

  • Use quick hangers (available from a framing shop) to hang (figure D).

  • Attach to the corners with a glue gun.

  • Glue hanger down, then cover the hanger with more hot glue to seal in firmly.
