Interior designer, Shirley Horowitz, gives tips for mixing and matching pieces from around the house for a lovely Thanksgiving dinner setting:
- Use a needlepoint floor runner diagonally as a table runner. Be sure to clean it first if necessary.
- Look for interesting pieces like a silver wine carrier from late 1800s for a lovely accent.
- Decorate a vase shaped like a horn-of-plenty for the season, which is perfect for a small table setting.
- Pull a mirrored perfume tray from the bathroom into the dining room to hold chocolates or liquors (figure A).
- Take Oxblood vases out of the den and use them as the centerpiece. Leave them empty or add flowers.
- Mix different china patterns for a more interesting table. Cover a fruit pattern with a dessert/salad plate with a gold rim or use a gravy boat with a different pattern from the other pieces.
- Stack two compotes filled with fruit and vegetables for a unique centerpiece on a buffet (figure B).
- Artificial ram horns with silver candlesticks on them add to the natural feeling .
- Use different types and heights of candlesticks to enhance the table's look.
- Incorporate a variety of trays to carry things to and from the table.
- Pull a smaller table into the dining room for additional seating. Again, mix China patterns for interest.
- Use a glass planter as a wine or champagne cooler (figure C).
