These fun sock and glove ornaments are a great family project for the holidays.

Decorate mismatched gloves, and clothespin them to a rope that has been "striped" with electrical tape for an easy holiday decoration.
Clever crafter Cheryl Greene demonstrates how to turn those orphan socks and mismatched gloves into delightful holiday ornaments that even the teenagers will think are cool.

Materials:

gloves
scissors
empty paper towel tube
lentils or other type of beans
narrow ribbon
orphan socks (they don't have to be holiday themed)
needle and thread
googly eyes
museum wax
toothpick

Steps:

  1. Turn in the tip of the two outside fingers of a glove (the index and pinky fingers) and glue in place so it won’t pop out. Turn the thumb all the way in on itself so it disappears.

  2. Cut about 1-1/2 inches off the paper towel tube and insert into the opening of the glove to hold it open while you fill the glove with lentils, beans, popcorn or whatever filling you have on hand.

  3. Fill the glove until the beans reach the tube. Remove the tube and tie the glove with a 12-inch piece of narrow ribbon.

Figure B
  • Tie a second strip of ribbon around the middle of the filled glove (figure A).

  • Using an orphan sock, measure up about 5-1/2 inches from the toe and cut across.

  • Measure 5-1/2 inches from the top of the sock and cut again (figure B).

  • With the toe end piece, roll the end up about 1-1/4 inches twice to fashion the stocking cap. Slip it into place on the glove head, snipping any dangling ribbon pieces.

  • Take the cuff piece of sock and cut it in half lengthwise. Save one piece for another project. Fold the other piece in half and cut down the fold for two equal pieces.

  • Lay the two pieces on top of each other and sew across the short end with contrasting thread. This becomes a scarf for the little glove guy. Wrap it around his neck, snipping any dangling ribbons.

  • Fringe the scarf by clipping the ends if desired.

  • Attach googly eyes using a clump of museum wax on the end of a toothpick. Pick up the eye with the museum wax. Put a dab of hot glue on the back side of the eye and attach to the face of the little glove guy.

  • Use the same technique to attach tiny buttons (figure C).

  • Hot glue a little decoration on the edge of the cap, using a button or other decal.
