Decorating With Flowers, Fruit
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-1108 -- More Projects »
Floral designer Ardith Beveridge offers creative decorating suggestions.
- Working with flowers and fruit together, be sure not to cover the arrangement, as the ethylene from the fruit could kill the flowers.
Artichokes are great for arrangements (figure A). Place floral foam in a clay pot, then use an apple corer to cut a hole in the center. Place the artichoke stem in the hole. Place small willow branches around the artichoke and secure with a green ribbon. Cover the floral foam with moss. Another fun idea for artichokes is to place rose petals between the artichoke leaves.
Try to stay with a color theme. Green apples, daisies, roses and lemon leaves, for example, all work well together to form a decorative centerpiece (figure B). Another idea for apples is to use them as a candleholder. Just place an anchor pin into the bottom of an apple so it will stand up straight. Place the apple into a glass hurricane candleholder. Core another apple and place a candle in the center, then this one a top the other. The apples should last a few days. Use a lemon zester to create engravings and designs in fruits such as lemons, limes and oranges.
Watermelon works great as a decorative floral foam (figure C). Strawberries also add a decorative touch to any centerpiece. Before placing a strawberry in any centerpiece, make sure to secure it with two toothpicks.
Pineapples are an excellent base for a centerpiece (figure D). Secure the pineapple to floral foam with wood picks, then decorate with bear grass and hydrangeas.
