Host Cindy Piccoli dresses up a porch or great room for Halloween with this great and easy jack-o'-lantern banner.
Materials:
30" x 40" piece of black or other dark-colored waterproof nylon fabric*
1/2 yard orange nylon fabric
small amount of green nylon fabric for stem
pinking shears
paper for creating template
approximately 12 feet of green 1" ribbon
glue gun or no-sew fabric glue
gold cording (enough to go around pumpkin plus some excess)
black permanent marker
* This material works well for banners that are to be hung outdoors, and the measurements do not need to conform to those suggested. Any material may be used indoors and may be any desired size.
Steps:
- Using pinking shears, cut around the edges of the dark nylon rectangle.
- To produce the template, draw a pumpkin (large enough to fit on the black backing) onto paper and cut out. Cut out the eyes and mouth and save these pieces for later use.
- Trace pumpkin onto orange fabric.
- Use pinking shears to cut out pumpkin outline, and place it on rectangular banner. Do not cut eyes and mouth from the orange fabric.
- Use hot glue or no-sew glue to attach the pumpkin to the banner.
- Using the template pieces cut earlier, trace eyes and mouth onto black nylon and cut out.
- Use glue gun or no-sew glue to attach the eyes and mouth to the orange pumpkin.
- Create a stem from the green fabric and glue atop pumpkin on banner.
- Cover up the outer edges of the banner with green ribbon. Glue on.
- Use 6" pieces of cording to create simple "stars" in the background above the pumpkin. Glue on. Optional: Cut a piece of gold cording to fit the circumference of the pumpkin. Glue on.
- Turn the top of the banner fabric over about 4" so that a rod or ribbon may be inserted to hang the banner. Glue down.
- Use a black permanent marker to draw the "segments" on the pumpkin.
