  • Childproof the house. Look for dangling electric cords, and uncovered outlets. Put special knobs on the doors to off-limit rooms.

  • Days before the visit, send a questionnaire to the kids or call them to find out their preferred activities and foods (figure A). This will give you time to assemble ingredients and materials.

  • Start a long-term project such as planting sunflower seeds in a paper cup filled with dirt (figure B). You can transplant them during another visit.

  • Give each child a breakfast tray with a lip on which they can do their craft projects (figure C).

  • Assemble a kit with the things commonly used by the child so that the parents will have less to pack. You might include a child-size fork and spoon, shampoo, disposable bibs, and nail clippers, for example.

  • Assemble a toy bag or box for special toys.

  • Create a private area for the child to sit and dream or nap or read. It can be in a closet, a corner of a room or underneath a staircase. If space is limited, assign a special drawer to the child for his or her private use.

  • Assemble clothes and jewelry for make-believe sessions.
