  • Buy or save plastic containers from the grocery store (figure A). They are inexpensive, convenient and can be left at the party. Deviled eggs, for example, are a perfect fit.

  • When transporting a cake, stick toothpicks or candles in it to keep the plastic wrap off the icing (figure B).

  • To avoid spilling stews, chili or soups, try taping the lid to the pot with painters tape. Then wrap the pot in newspaper (figure C) and place in a cooler.

  • Chinese takeout cartons, which are treated on the inside, are an a good option for keeping food hot and contained.

  • Shower caps make easy covers for odd-shaped dishes.

  • Keep gardener's gloves on hand for carrying hot pots.

  • Carry toppings in separate plastic containers to mix at the last minute.

  • Spoon hot sauces into a insulated beverage container to keep hot. Pour over dish after you arrive.

  • Carry food on the flat floor of the trunk rather than the slanted car seat. Place a rubber mat on the trunk floor and place containers on the mat. This will keep them stationary. Don't stack--single layer only.
