On a cold day when you want something to warm up the whole family--including the dog--try the recipe below for Chow Hound Chicken Soup.

Pet expert Arden Moore explains that not all leftover table scraps are healthy for your dog. Instead, she suggests some healthy homemade dishes.

Top 3 Dog-Food No-No's

  • Do not feed your dog onions because they contain sulfur that can damage a dog's red blood cells.

  • No raw bones of any kind--they're a choking hazard, can splinter and injure your pet, and can also harbor germs like salmonella.

  • Chocolate causes upset stomach.

Good Alternatives

  • carrots--nutritious and help clean teeth

  • nylon or other synthetic bones

  • cookies made with carob chips instead of chocolate

* Note: Feed your dog two to three small meals each day rather than one large meal.

Chow Hound Chicken Soup

5 cups water
2 chicken breasts
2 carrots, peeled and diced
2 potatoes, peeled and cubed

Place chicken breasts in a pot of low-simmering water. Add the vegetables, cover the pot and allow to simmer for about two hours. Add the rice and stir. Simmer for 30 to 40 minutes or until the water is absorbed. Discard the skin and bones from the chicken.

Canine Casserole

1/2 lb. ground beef
1 garlic clove, pressed or minced
2 cups long-grain brown rice
1/2 cup broccoli
1/2 cup carrots

Preparation:

Brown the ground beef with the garlic. Meanwhile, steam the rice in a steamer and the vegetables in the microwave. Be sure to use a microwave-safe dish. Combine all ingredients and serve.
