Making Doughnuts

TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-327 -- More Projects »
TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham demonstrates the best and tastiest ways to make doughnuts at home.
  • It has been said that a sea captain who found that he couldn't steer his boat and eat his pastry at the same time invented doughnuts. His solution was to punch a hole in it and place it around the knob on the wheel.

  • Shape the dough into circles that are about 1/2 thick and use the top of a bottle to cut out the doughnut hole. Place the dough in the oil and cook until golden brown, flipping often.

  • Cake doughnuts should be deep-fried at 360 degrees, whereas yeast doughnuts--otherwise known as raised doughnuts--should be deep-fried at 375 degrees.

  • Remove doughnuts from the oil with a slotted spoon or a wire-frying basket.

  • Place freshly made doughnuts in a paper bag filled with sugar. Shake the bag until the doughnut is coated.
