TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham points out basic items to keep around the house for short-notice entertaining.
  • Cake mix is a necessary entertaining staple to have in the cupboard, along with a can of ready-made frosting. For a more personal touch, top the cake with fresh fruit and whipped cream or powdered sugar.

  • Fresh Parmesan cheese is another one. This very versatile cheese can be used to top pasta dishes, steamed vegetables, casserole dishes, rice or even popcorn.

  • Croutons can be used to dash up any salad. To make your own, simply cut bread into small squares, lightly oil them, add one teaspoon pepper, garlic salt to taste, and if you prefer, Italian seasoning mix. Bake on a cookie sheet for 10 minutes.

  • Ice cream and pudding both make tasty snacks, and they work even better when they are combined into one snack.

  • Make sure that you always have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages on hand to serve those guests who want them.

  • Oil and vinegar make for a bread wonderful dip on short notice.
