Author Kathy Steligo talks about how to turn family recipes into a family heirloom by collecting them in a cookbook. She shows how to organize, decorate and create themed versions.

  • Use decorative papers, which are available at craft and office-supply stores (figure A). Type old recipes on the paper or load decorative paper into the computer printer. Attach a photo of Aunt Edna or Grandma next to their recipes.

  • Glue a handwritten recipe that has been handed down onto a full-size, decorative page (figure B).

  • Glue a handwritten recipe and a family picture to a larger page (figure C) .

  • Organize pages into sections such as "Summer," "Winter," "Uncle John," "Favorite Cakes," etc.

  • Create a table of contents after you've determined the order and numbered the pages.

  • Create the cover of the book using a photograph of the family or a favorite vacation spot glued to the front.

  • Give the cookbooks themes, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving and Mother's Day.
