Healthy chef Beth Ginsberg tells how to make a low-fat version of this sweet treat.
Ingredients:
2-2/3 cups white or oat flour
1 cup maple or natural-cane sugar
1 cup rolled oats
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 to 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 egg white
1-1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
canola oil cooking spray
Preparation:
Mix all ingredients. Roll out dough and put in a pie pan. Bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Fill the pan with apple pie filling and cover with another batch of rolled-out dough and bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
* Note: This is a healthier crust because substitutions for fattening ingredients are used--egg whites replace whole eggs, oats provide a good fiber source, and the sweetener comes from maple cane sugar and applesauce. This version of apple pie crust has 378 calories and 1.3 grams of fat.
