Designer Danny Seo points out creative ways to make beautiful place mats, coasters and runners out of chopsticks. Materials:
string
chopsticks
Steps:
- Cut a long piece of string and double it up.
- Make a knot around the first chopstick about two inches in from the end.
- Turn the next chopstick in the opposite direction and make another knot.
- Continue tying, alternating chopstick ends until the piece is the desired length (figure A).
- Repeat the knotting process at the other end of chopsticks to secure.
Other Ideas
- Before assembly paint chopsticks with one coat of acrylic paint. Try using a contrasting color for the string for a bold design statement. Cut them in half to make coasters. To segment the wood, score rather than cut through the wood (so the cut piece doesn't go flying through the air), then gently break it. Sand the rough edges with a piece of sandpaper (figure B).
- Make garden markers. Leave packaged chopsticks attached and write the name of the plant on the wide end. Insert in the ground.
For a banner using the seed packet, cut two holes with a punch in the upper left edge of the packet. Break sticks in two and thread one stick through the holes (figure C). Plant in ground.
