30-Minute Car Wash

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-1026 -- More Projects »
Car-care expert Prentice St. Clair shows how to wash a car in just minutes.

Steps:

  1. Start by thoroughly rinsing the car. Be sure to place a nozzle on your hose to reduce water waste.

  2. Instead of cleaning from top to bottom, start from the bottom instead--the dirtiest part typically takes the longest to clean.

  3. Use car wash shampoo rather than dishwashing detergent or liquid because that can take the wax off the car.

Figure A
  • Start by cleaning the front wheel with a soft-scrub sponge (figure A). Continue working your way down the car, scrubbing the doors from top to bottom.

  • Clean away stuck-on bugs with a solution of all-purpose house cleaner and water (50/50 ratio). First rinse with water, spray on a light mist of the liquid mixture, then lightly scrub.

  • Rinse the areas you have already cleaned as well as the rest of the car.

  • Prepare a new bucket of soap and water rather than reusing the dirty water from the first part of the project.

  • Dip a wash mitt into the soapy solution. Bring it up soaking wet, then start by cleaning the hood, then working your way to the rest of the car, cleaning from top to bottom, including the tires.

    Figure B
  • Clean the wiper blades by slipping the wash mitt underneath the blade and (figure B).

  • Once you have washed the entire surface of the car, rinse it thoroughly.

  • Use an old soft towel or synthetic chamois (preferable) to dry.

  • Once everything is dry, including the tires, coat a towel with standard cooking spray and apply to the tires. This will help prevent the accumulation of brake dust in the future.

  • If plastic headlight lenses are getting dull or yellowed, just scrub thoroughly with all-purpose cleaner, then follow with a rubbing compound and a coat of standard automotive wax. Wipe off with a clean towel to finish.

  • Use a clean terrycloth towel to buff the windows and remove any leftover water spotting.
