Put petroleum jelly on drawer runners to keep them sliding smoothly.

Household expert Joey Green offers smart alternatives to costly furniture polishes.
  • Use fabric softener sheets to polish wood. The antistatic ingredient will help repel dust in the future.

  • Make homemade wood polish by combining 2/3 cup corn oil and 1/3 cup vinegar, then pour into a spray bottle. You could also use half olive oil, half lemon juice. Rub furniture with old pantyhose--they provide a gentle abrasive action.

  • Use mayonnaise or toothpaste to combat water spots on wood. Again, rub with pantyhose.

  • Corn oil is a wonderful protectant for unfinished or teak woods. It only takes a drop or two and is perfect for wood surfaces that come into contact with food.

  • Rub petroleum jelly in the runners of wood drawers to prevent them from sticking. It's also good for helping unstick sticky windows.

  • To boost the cleaning power of glass cleaners, add a drop or two of liquid fabric softener.

  • To clean patio furniture, spray with shaving cream, which is actually just concentrated soap. Rinse with a garden hose and spray on interior car cleaner.
