TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares some simple recipes for making your own cleaners at home.

  • Remove soap scum with this homemade formula: one teaspoon borax, 1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent, 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar, and two cups hot water. Put in a spray bottle and shake well to mix. Spray on the soap scum and wipe clean with a sponge.

  • Use shaving cream to clean the bathroom mirror, and it won't fog up anymore.

  • Bon Ami cleaning powder works well as a soft scrubbing cleanser.

  • Clean marble with pulverized chalk. Apply with a damp sponge.

  • To make your own heavy-duty scouring powder, mix together 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup washing soda. Sprinkle on the surface that needs scouring, then rub clean with a sponge.

  • Make an all-purpose cleaner by mixing together 1/2 teaspoon washing soda, two teaspoons borax, 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap or detergent, and two cups hot water.
