Figure B

Host Mary Ellen Pinkham offers up another batch of tips that seem bizarre but really work.

  • Cut off a pencil eraser and glue it to the bottom of figurines or other decorations to keep them from scratching the surface of tables.

  • Wet rubber gloves can be difficult to slip on. Use a hair dryer to quickly dry out the gloves (figure A). A dryer set to cool is also a great way to quickly dry salad greens after rinsing.

  • Hide small valuables such as jewelry in a tennis ball. Just make a small slit in it with a knife and drop in jewelry (figure B).

  • Keep a plant trimming green and healthy during transport by using a potato. Just poke a small hole in a potato and insert the end of the clipping.

  • A disposable diaper can be used to water plants while the family is away on vacation. Lay the diaper out in a large tray such as a cake pan, soak with water and set a plant on top of the diaper. The plant will absorb water as it needs it.
