Keep the refrigerator smelling fresh by placing a cotton ball that has been soaked with lemon, orange or peppermint extract inside.
Linda Cobb, the "Queen of Clean," offers simple ways to keep the refrigerator and microwave clean.
  • Anytime you clean electrical appliances of any kind, be sure not to spray the cleaning solution directly on it. Spray it on a cloth or use paper towels to clean the microwave.

  • The inside of the microwave can be tough, so use nature's abrasive--baking soda. Sprinkle a bit on the microwave bottom, then scrub the interior with a nice, damp cloth (dampen with warm water). This method won't scratch the surface.

  • To remove microwave odors, combine a cup of warm water with a half-cup of lemon juice (or fresh lemon slices) in a glass bowl. Heat to boiling in the microwave and remain boiling for three minutes. Keep the door closed afterward for 30 minutes. Remove the bowl and wipe it clean with paper towels. The microwave will be sparkling clean and will smell wonderful, too.

  • Burnt popcorn is the worst offender when it comes to odors. Remove this odor by mixing a half-cup of water and an equal amount of vanilla extract in a small bowl. Heat to boiling in the microwave, shut off, then don't open the microwave door for 12 hours or overnight.

  • The next time you clean out the refrigerator, wipe down all the interior surfaces with white distilled vinegar applied to a soft cloth. This will reduce and eliminate odors as well as kill mold and mildew. Do this each time it gets dirty (at least once a month).

  • Alleviate tough odors such as onion and garlic in the refrigerator with activated charcoal (found in aquarium stores). Keep the charcoal in a plastic dish, punch holes in the lid and forget about it.
