Host Mary Ellen Pinkham has unconventional household uses for foods.
  • Peanut butter can be used to remove label adhesive from glass and plastic items. After removing as much of the label as possible, spread some creamy--not chunky--peanut butter on the item and scrape off the remaining label with a spoon (see photo) . Wash the item to remove the peanut butter.

  • Peanut butter can also be used to remove gum from hair.

  • Remove tarnish from copper pots and pans by rubbing them with Worcestershire sauce.

  • Many thermos bottles have a narrow mouth, making it hard to find a brush to scrub the inside. Clean a thermos without a brush by pouring in a cup of water, adding three teaspoons of uncooked rice and about two tablespoons of baking soda. The rice grains will act as scrubbing agents while the baking soda acts as a cleanser.

  • Mayonnaise will add a nice shine to shoes. Simply rub it on, then wipe it off.

  • Soak a sponge in a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water and place it in a lunchbox overnight to remove odors.

  • Cover up scratches on wooden furniture by rubbing the surface with a walnut.

  • Perk up an ailing houseplant by treating it to a couple of tablespoons of pancake syrup once a month.
