TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham reveals her favorite cleaning tools and techniques.
  • A double-sided bucket is one of the most useful tools in the home-cleaning arsenal (see photo). Tools can be carried in one side, and cleaning solution can be carried in the other.

  • Cut down on the need to clean grout in the bathroom by using a masonry sealer. First clean the grout using a grout brush, which is a specialized brush that is available at most home stores. Apply the masonry sealer when the grout is clean. This will keep it mildew resistant for a long time.

  • Scoring cleansers are a necessity around the house, but be careful about choosing a cleanser. Look for nonscratching types. These types of cleansers are strong enough to clean floors, yet are also safe to use on appliances, glass and even enamel cookware.

  • Use a plastic scraper to remove messy globs without damaging the surface of counters or other areas.

  • A retractable razor scraper is great for removing materials from glass.

  • Keep a squeegee on hand to clean glass and flat surfaces. It makes the job much easier.
