Periodic Cleaning

TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-329 -- More Projects »
Organization consultant Louise Kurzeka provides tips for a quick and efficient cleanup around the house.

Daily

  • Put on a smock or apron when cleaning to avoid damaging nice clothes. An old oversize T-shirt works great for this. Remove rings, bracelets and watches as well.

  • Wear comfortable shoes, and make sure they have supportive nonslip soles.

  • Clothing rags are always better to work with than paper towels. Paper towels can be expensive and wear out a lot faster than cloth. Plus, cloth can also be washed and reused.

  • Keep a spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol in the bathroom or kitchen for spritzing stains and wiping them before they set.

Weekly

  • Wastebaskets are probably ready for a thorough cleaning at these periodic cleaning sessions. This is a great job to dole out to the children.

Monthly

  • To prevent hard-water stains on your shower doors, thoroughly clean with a de-limer type product, then apply rain-guard finish (such as the kind that is normally used for windshields). This will help the water sheet off more smoothly.

  • A thorough way to clean mini-blinds is to remove them from their frames, take them outside and wash them with a mild soap solution, followed by a clean-water rinse and towel dry. To keep them clean, dust weekly with a lamb's wool duster (close the blinds first), and remember to dust both sides.

  • A mop can do more than clean the floor--use it to clean walls and ceilings. You won't need a ladder, and you'll be able to go over a large surface with one swipe.

  • Don't forget to clean your equipment, too. Wash your dust mop heads in a mesh bag to keep them from getting frizzled. Air dry to avoid static electricity.

  • Wash your broom, too. Clean brooms clean better. Dip them in a solution of water and all-purpose cleaner, shaking off the excess. Dry with the handle down to maintain the broom's shape.
