Newspapers aren't just for lining birdcages. Host Mary Ellen Pinkham offers a few unique ways to use old newspapers around the house.
  • Make emergency fire logs out of newspapers to use in a fireplace. Roll newspaper sheets tightly, then tie them up. Let them soak in soapy water for a few moments, then stand them up straight to dry (see photo).

  • Use newspaper to clean a grill. Place damp sheets of newspaper on a warm grill rack. Place the lid back on and let the newspaper sit there for about 30 minutes. The moisture will soften up the grime that has built up on the grill rack and will make it easy to wipe off.

  • Stuff a wooden canister, suitcase or wooden chest with newspaper to rid it of an unwanted smell.

  • If a candleholder doesn't hold tightly too the candle, place a few small circles of newspaper in the candleholder to improve its grip.

  • A foreign-language newspaper makes for a unique and interesting way to wrap a gift.

  • Place newspaper in the bottom of a garbage can to eliminate odors.
