Cleaning Wallpaper
Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-516 -- More Projects »
Don Aslett, author and cleaning expert, shows how to clean different types of wallpaper. Highlighting a variety of textures and vinyl, he shows what to use and what not to use.
- Stay away from abrasive pads and toothpaste. Pads will scrub the paper from the wall, and while toothpaste can sometimes remove a black mark, it leaves a dull mark that usually looks worse. The same can be said for powdered cleansers.
- Always use a soft towel when dealing with wallpaper. Any other cloth item, such as denim or burlap, won't work as well when attempting to clean this surface.
The best cleaner for dirty wallpaper is called a "dry sponge," which is available at most hardware stores. Wipe across the surface in long, methodical strokes (figure A). A dry sponge works well on older types of wallpaper.Vinyl-covered wallpaper is much easier to work with. If an eraser doesn't remove marks, most citrus and solvent cleaners with a soft towel will take a crayon mark off in seconds.
The best way to clean wall surfaces is with two containers (figure B). Fill one with water and dish detergent, and leave the second container empty. Dip a clean sponge in the soapy water, wipe the surface down, then wring out in the empty container. The intent and result is clear--by wringing out dirty water in a separate container, the clean dishwater stays clean and lasts far longer. If one container is used, the dirty water returns back to the wall with the sponge. When finished, wipe the surface clean with a soft towel.
