The key to making homemade soap is to use molds and shapes that are found around the house.
Designer Alexa Lett demonstrates how to make unusual gift bars of soap, using glycerin, essential oils and some of the most striking molds such as planters, pudding bowls, wooden ice cream treat stick molds, lids, jars and more.

She includes ideas for finishing off the soap bars with a variety of wrappings as well as ideas on gift presentation.

Materials:

glycerin (in solid form; can be found at craft stores)
old soup cans
double boiler
soap molds/containers (your choice of type)
food coloring (your choice)
miscellaneous objects to go in the soap (shells, starfish, beads, etc.)
essential oil (your choice)

Steps:

  1. Place the solid block of glycerin in an old soup can and place the container in a double boiler, filled with water.

  2. Melt the glycerin.

  3. Prepare the soap mold/container by spraying it with a little cooking oil. This will allow the hardened soap to pop right out easily.

  4. Pour the melted glycerin into the mold about a quarter of the way full.

  5. Add a few drops of food coloring and any objects desired. Mardi Gras beads were used for this particular project.

  6. Add a few drops of essential oil and pour the rest of the glycerin into the mold. Let harden.

* Note: Ice trays, custard dishes, tart tins and frozen ice-treat containers make perfect soap molds.
