TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham provides her favorite tips for stain removal using common household items.
- The moment a stain occurs is when it is easiest to treat, so immediately dab cold water on the stain and try to get as much of it out as possible.
- The next step occurs as soon as you get home. Take off the garment and throw it into a sink full of cool water for an hour or so. This loosens the dirt or particles in the stain.
- If the stain is protein-based, it is best to use a detergent with enzymes.
- If it is a mud stain, simply wait for the mud to dry, then gently brush it away with a soft cloth. Most of the mud should crumble off, and the rest will come out in the wash. Try applying denatured alcohol on persistent mud stains.
- For really tough stains, make a paste of kitchen cleanser and water, then rub onto the stain. Let set for approximately five minutes.
- Now it is time to wash the soaked item. Make sure you read the label on the item for washing instructions.
- If you are out of fabric softener, add white vinegar to the laundry. Simply put two tablespoons into the rinse cycle of your wash.
- Make sure that the stain is out before you throw it into the dryer. Once a stain goes through the dryer, it will be baked or set into the clothing.
