Host Mary Ellen Pinkham offers neat and efficient ideas for reducing the laundry load.

  • Family members should each have a mesh laundry bag in which to place their dirty clothes. Buy mesh bags with multiple compartments, and sort articles of clothing into different pockets (see photo).

  • While children are young, buy them socks that are all one color. Assign a different color to each child to makes sorting them easier.

  • Before doing the laundry, inspect the clothes because they may not be that dirty. Some items just need to be re-pressed and placed on hangers.

  • Each child should have a set of play clothes that they can wear for a few days before washing.

  • Wear an apron while doing household chores to keep your clothes from getting soiled.

  • Assign a different towel color to each family member. This helps to keep track of how often they're tossing them in the dirty clothes to be washed.

  • Keep a little plastic bin under the kitchen sink for dirty kitchen towels. Wash the towels when the bin gets full.
