Home-maintenance expert Mike Ferrara explains the best methods for cleaning various household surfaces and maintaining their appearance.
- A common household surface is plastic laminate. The most common stains on this surface are food, water and fingerprints. To remove these stains, simply pour rubbing alcohol on the area, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then wipe off. Rinse away with water and a soft cloth.
- If you have an ink stain on a plastic laminate surface, remove it by covering the stain with denatured alcohol and letting that draw it out. Blot it away with a damp cloth and rinse with water.
- Car wax can improve the look of a worn countertop. Apply it as you would to a car's surface.
- Wipe up spills on marble immediately, or it will stain. Marble is somewhat permeable and will absorb liquid if it is not wiped up within a few minutes. Wash marble with warm water on a soft cloth or chamois.
- Marble should be wiped down a couple of times each year with a mixture of water and liquid dishwashing detergent.
- Marks on vinyl that will not come off with soap and water can be removed with emulsion polish.
- Ceramic tiles should be mopped with liquid dishwashing soap and water. Dry with a chamois.
