Homes on S Street How am I Historic?

HGTV and Rebuilding Together hope to repair ten homes of low-income elderly citizens living on S Street SE. One of those ten homes is that of Howard and Mary Brown. The Browns are in their seventies, have been married for 50 wonderful years, and have lived in their home for 40. Unfortunately, Mr. Brown was just diagnosed with lung cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. He also suffers from severe arthritis, making handrails and first-floor home upgrades, including a bathroom, critical. After paying their monthly mortgage, the Browns live on less than $14,000 per year, leaving no additional money for much-needed home repairs.

Similarly, Trudy Broome, the Brown’s neighbor, suffers from asthma, arthritis, diabetes and hypertension in addition to a number of other ailments.  She lives on Social Security disability checks and relies on the food bank for food. She has lived at her home for 11 years and until her disabilities forced her to stop working, she had great pride in maintaining her home. Now her walls are on the verge of collapsing if she doesn't get help soon.

These are only two of the 10 families in need. HGTV and its partners are aiming to provide those who have built this community the opportunity to live in a comfortable, safe place in the neighborhood they call home.

How am I Historic? How am I Historic? - All three building projects are in the historically significant neighborhood of Anacostia. It is the home of a major fort that defended the Capital City during the Civil War. It was also the site of the “Bonus March,” which protested the effects of the Great Depression. In the spring of 1932, a large group of World War I veterans established a camp at Anacostia Flats where they created shanties from cardboard boxes. They demanded a wartime bonus that President Hoover refused to pay and had them removed by force. Anacostia is also known as the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. This site is within 2-3 blocks of each of the project sites.
