Home of Kris and Tom Nelson How am I Historic?

When Kris and Tom Nelson began restoring their three-story Victorian era home in the historic district of Dayton’s Bluff in St. Paul, they dove in head first, determined to make a difference. They were active community volunteers, overseeing maintenance of the community “rain garden” across from their home as well as delighting passersbys with a beautiful rose garden in their front yard. Shortly thereafter, their plans were put on hold with the birth of their first son. Another year later and they were expecting their second child.  Kris says, “A sleeping baby in the stroller, Tom up on the ladder (singing and scraping).  It was our own American Dream come true.”  The once quiet home was now bouncing with activity yet still in dire need of crucial repairs. Eighteen months ago, Kris’ plans took one more unexpected turn when Tom died of a heart attack in his sleep. As Kris and her two boys begin to cope with their tremendous loss, they continue to live in an unfinished home. With the help of HGTV and its partners, it is the hope that Kris and her family can finally realize the dream of a fully restored home.

How am I Historic? How am I Historic? - Nelson’s Victorian-era home is more than 100 years old and located in historic Dayton’s Bluff, an area renowned for charming fix-‘em-up houses.
