Wilder Recreation Center and City Academy How am I Historic? How am I Green?

The Wilder Recreation Center and City Academy was designed by the country’s first African American municipal architect, Clarence Wigington, during President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s WPA projects. As the nation’s first charter school, City Academy, located in the East Side community, has been educating economically disadvantaged high school students for the past 15 years. School administrators educate their students with a different approach – they highlight the importance of giving back to the community through volunteering and caring for the environment. While the students rely on City Academy for a robust education, the neighborhood residents turn to the Wilder Center for healthy, outdoor activities. All of the most important philosophies and devotees are in place for teaching moral and educational excellence, but it lacks the appropriate facilities. Students involved in the school’s YOUTHBUILD program have already made efforts in improving this site and others in the neighborhood, but residents hope that HGTV and its partners can beautify available spaces and possibly install a garden for students to grow their own lunches!

How am I Historic? How am I Historic? - The Wilder Recreation Center was built as part of President Roosevelt’s WPA projects in the 1930’s.
How am I Green? How am I Green?- This school hopes to install a functional garden so students can raise vegetables to be used in their daily lunches that are cooked on site.
