Originally built in 1929 as a public school, the Manhasset/Great Neck Economic Opportunity Council (EOC) is also known as the Hagedorn Community Center. Until the 1960's the school was segregated, serving the predominantly African American population that surrounds the center. Following a desegregation law suit, the student body was bussed to other schools and the building was closed. It was then re-opened as a community center focused on helping "at risk" youngsters in Manhasset/Great Neck achieve success by providing support for both the children and their families. Activities include a Head Start program, after school programs, a family support program, teen youth council, summer programs and AA meetings. The school is run with great dedication and effectiveness in spite of the structural problems and lack of funding to maintain outside grounds.
