Roger Cromwell began collecting fountain pens a little less than six years ago. He now owns somewhere around 1,500 pens, not including drawer pens. His passion began when he was helping his neighbors move and came across a few large pens of theirs.

They gave them to him, then he immediately began to scour newspapers and garage sales to find more. He looks for uncommon fountain pens such as the Abraham Lincoln DNA pen that he owns. His wife and daughter are very supportive of this sometimes expensive hobby.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • A vintage limited production pen is very hard to find. A Duofold Mandarin yellow pen from the 1920s once sold for $8, but today it is worth $1,500 to $2,000.

  • In the early 1900s a sterling silver or 14-karat gold filled Parker Snake pen costs $15 to $20, but if you can find one today it could be worth $25,000 to $30,000!
