A 1950s Solaradio
Bill Overbeck owns more than 1,000 antique radios--so many that he ran out of room in his house to display them. To solve the problem he built an addition to the home just for the collection.

His obsession began 45 years ago when he was a little boy. His collection of antique radios represent more than 100 years of history.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • Novelty transistor radios can be a great way to start a collection. They come in all shapes and sizes--from animal shapes to soda cans. You can find them at garage sales and flea markets for about $10.

  • Look for unusual radios. Radios like the standard micronic rubies were made in the early 1960s and are tiny. Each of these little marvels are about two inches square and can be found for about $75 each.
