Herb Kean owns more than 1,000 antique tools. Some go back 10,000 years--everything from antique barrel-carving planes to an 18th-century goosewing ax lines the walls of his den. In the basement he not only restores his antique tools, but he also makes replicas of them.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • A brass and boxwood rule from the 1800s is worth about $200.

  • Look for a Stanley number 602 Bed Rock plane from 1910. It should be worth about $650. A pre-World War 2 Norris number A1 dovetail panel plane is typically worth more than $3,000!
