A handmade American flag

This is a 1920s cigar fan that is worth $1,000.
The American flag is perhaps the most well-known symbol in the world. Kit Hinrichs knows a lot about this graphic design, and he owns more than 300,000 artifacts that are American-flag related--from flying flags and beaded works to toys.

His obsession started with his most prized possession, a family heirloom that was sewn by his great, great, great aunt in 1865. He has been collecting ever since, and he's even written a book (see top photo).

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own American Flag collection:

  • A 100% Made in the USA flag is a great way to start off a collection. A nylon basic American flag is affordable and ranges slightly in price based on size. A 2000 flag ranges from $30 to $120.

  • You might have to go outside the States to find rare items. American-flag patterned instruments are manufactured in other countries like Germany. A 2002 Guaneri violin size 35 by 8 cm can be shipped from Germany for about $250.

  • Items made in the USA in the 1800s are very valuable and delicate. Patriotic items can cost thousands if they are in good condition! An 1870s quilt with 15 American-flag patterns that is hand stitched from Amana, Iowa, can cost $2,500
