Bob Kautzman is fascinated with the development and inner workings of what he considers an engineering marvel--the vacuum cleaner. He aspires to build his very own timeline of this dirt-busting wonder, so much so that more than 900 vacuum cleaners have found a home with Kautzman. His collection started with the electric vacuum cleaners that were traded in at his father's shop. Here are quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • Vacuum cleaners from the 1940s and '50s such as G.E. Spic & Spans usually run about $10 and up.
  • Look for old machines made out of aluminum, wood, glass or tin.
  • Promotional sewing kits, tape measures and banks cost around $45 to $50. German and American upright vacuum miniatures from the 1920s are worth from $50 to $75.
  • Salesmen samples can be worth hundreds of dollars.
