Her home is a romantic haven, filled with printed plates and platters and teacups. Donna Mirkovich is thrilled by the frills of transferware known as Staffordshire. She feels the history, the real-life romances of these objects, and the hands that they have passed through. This is what has made them truly valuable to her for the past several years. Each week Mirkovich goes to antique stores and flea markets to find the things she loves best. Here are some tips for starting your own collection:

  • To identify the age of a piece of transferware, check the bottom of it. If it's stamped only "England," then the piece dates from 1890 to 1913.

  • If it's stamped "Made in England," it's from 1913 or later.
