One question that people always ask Collector Inspector Harry Rinker is when their collectibles were made. One key clue can be color because color speaks decade. Take the 1950s, for instance—two dominant colors from that decade were pink and black (figure A).

Those colors were found in everything from clothing and cars, to household appliances. Pink and black were the "in" colors. Moving into the 1960s, aqua or turquoise (figure B) replaced the pink and black trends of the 1950s.

What came next? The avocado, rust and gold of the 1970s (figure C). These colors are hot right now in the collectible world. Is color the only thing that speaks decade? Absolutely not! Design also does, as shown in the plates in figure C. America, what were we thinking?!?
