Fishing Reels
Flea Market Finds With The Kovels : Episode FMF-206 -- More Projects »
Host Ralph Kovel is hooked on fishing collectibles! At the Metrolina Expo in Charlotte, N.C., he discovers dealer Veronica Malchione's valuable fishing reels. Many of these beautiful wooden reels date back to the late 1800s and sell for several hundred dollars.
This British reel dates back to 1890 and is valued at $500. The value is high because it's in mint condition.
Ebonite and brass with an ivory handle, this reel is priced at $525. It still has some silk line on it.
These wooden Nottingham reels are special because they were hand tooled instead of mass produced.
The lesser-quality Nottingham reel has a spine back--the brass piece that runs through the middle of the back. The downside of the reel is that it could warp when it got wet. This one, made in 1920, is valued at $75 to $100.
The higher-quality Nottingham reel has a star back that reinforces the reel to prevent it from warping. It opens up for cleaning and is in working condition. This one sells for around $450.
Before the advent of nylon fishing line, silk was the most common line material. There was one drawback--the silk line would rot if left on the reel, so line dryers such as this were used to dry the line.
