Restored Metal Tray

Our Place : Episode OPL-145 -- More Projects »
Artist Donna Dewberry shows how to restore antique painted trays and create original painted ones. Although the tray won't have the exact characteristics of the original, the colors will be greatly enhanced and your own personal touch will be displayed in the art piece (figure A).

Find out how easy it is to restore the luster on an antique tray (see instructions below).

Materials:

flat chisel brushes
acrylic paints (White, yellow, green and wine colors were used on the show.)
old metal trays
antiquing medium
clean dry cloth

Steps:

  1. Push a flat chisel brush into thick acrylic paint (applying a good amount of pressure), then cover an old painted metal tray thoroughly with two colors.

  2. Stroke on top of the existing painting to bring new life back to the tray (figure B).

  3. To make it look old again, rub on antiquing medium with a clean cloth (figure C). Once the antiquing medium is removed (figure D), the original strokes are both highlighted and muted, creating a sense of careful preservation.

Other Ideas

  • If the tray has a decal or other design on it that cannot be restored, simply spray paint it and create an original painting. Load the brush with two colors, pushing the paint in hard (figure E). If you prefer, load a third color onto the brush.

  • To make a rose, be sure that the light color is the outermost petal, with the dark color drawing the shadow to the interior of the rose. Lay down three quick brush strokes, then wiggle the brush around the center (figure F). Build out from the center, keeping your eye on the light color around the edge. Blend and stroke the colors, painting wet paint over wet paint.

  • Leaves and stems should be led by the light color, with the darker color, which is green this case, being allowed to flow onto the outside of the leaf (figure G). Don't worry about how the painting will look. Use effortless strokes and have fun with the process--the plate will turn out marvelously (figure H).
