This indigo checkered pattern is very common from the late 1800s to early 1900s. Many of the older fabrics are narrow widths--26 to 28 inches, though wider widths were available. It sells for around $25 per yard.

Brown fabric was a common but difficult fabric because it deteriorated quickly due to the dye. This piece dates between 1830 to 1860 and is valued at $100 for two yards.

From the mid-1800s, colorful large prints like this were often used in quilt backings.

"People don't realize that there were beatiful colors," said collector Gwynne Galloway of old textiles, and they're still pretty reasonably priced according to host Terry Kovel. Two-thirds of a yard of this pattern goes for $14.

Printed feedsack fabrics like these came from old cloth bags that held chicken feed. Once the feed was gone, the cloth was used to make clothing, curtains and quilts. The piece is priced at $14 and the one on the right at $25.

Hand washing vintage textiles is best and you should never let them collect dust as it can ruin them. Preserve them by covering with acid-free paper and store them flat or rolled. Be sure the storage area is not too hot or damp. Terry's rule of thumb is "fabrics like to live in the same climate you like to live."
