Later, with the development of the kiln, they were also made of pottery.

Age is only one factor in determining the price of a stein. This one is 250 years old, but because it common, it only sells for $650.

This stein has a date mark of 1702.

It's only slightly older, but because of its shape, design and size, it's priced at $15,000.

Character steins represent a huge part of German culture and history. They were produced between 1881 and 1910.
