Greg Schreiner, a pianist and composer, dedicated an entire room in his home to Marilyn Monroe memorabilia. His collection is sprinkled with mugs and makeup, as well as many things that were owned by her--furniture, several dresses and handwritten checks.

At his first auction he set his sights on a red dress that Monroe wore to the premiere of Monkey Business. He has surrounded himself with Monroe memorabilia for more than 25 years, and through his collection, he has gained a greater appreciation for the silver-screen legend.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • Items from Monroe's movies can also be valuable. Original posters from 1953's How to Marry a Millionaire can be worth over $200. Sets of original photos from Some Like it Hot have sold at auction for $4,000.

  • The most expensive collectibles are personal items owned or used by Monroe. One of her makeup cases sold at auction in 1999 for more than $200,000!

  • The infamous dress she wore when she sang Happy Birthday to President Kennedy in 1962 sold for a record $1.2 million.
