Back in the 1950s and '60s, before 3-D animation had even been seen on the big screen, filmmakers used suspense and sometimes cheesy effects to create the kind of movie magic that is taken for granted today.

For one collector, those days changed his life forever and now live on in his basement full of sci-fi and monster-movie props and memorabilia. Wes Shank is especially proud of his very first movie prop and the most valuable in his collection--the Blob. Though it's the most valuable, it's not his favorite. That honor goes to items from Forbidden Planet.

Here are quick tips for starting your very own collection:

  • Look for posters from lesser-known sci-fi films. They're often worth $100 to $200.
  • A 1956 poster from Forbidden Planet can fetch $7,000 or more.
  • A 1931 poster from Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde can be worth upward of $16,000.
