Materials:
chip board
balsa wood dowel
Yasutomo black wrinkled momigami paper (#HPSE236)
two pieces of decorative yuzen or origami paper
PVA glue
glue brush
scissors
sharp cutting knife
cutting board
1. Cut two four-inch pieces and two three-inch pieces from a dowel of balsa wood. Glue the ends of the pieces together to create a square-shaped frame (figure A ).
2. Cut four 4" x 2" pieces of black momigami paper. Spread PVA glue thinly on one piece of paper and glue it to the bottom of one side of the frame. Wrap the paper around the side of the frame and onto the top of the frame. Trim 1/2 inch off of each side to allow the remainder of the paper to wrap neatly around the rest of the side of the frame (figure B). Cut the corners at 45-degree angles (figure C). Repeat on the remaining three sides of the frame. Cover any gaps with small strips of paper.
3. Cut a piece of chip board the same size as a side edge of the frame for the spine of the book. Cut two square pieces of chip board slightly larger than the frame for the book boards.
4. Cut a 4" x 6" piece of black momigami paper and spread a thin layer of PVA glue onto the wrong side of the paper. Lay the paper vertically and place book boards and spine board onto the paper, leaving 1/8 inch space between the boards (figure D). Fold up the ends and glue them to the inside of the boards (figure E). Cut and glue a piece of black paper to cover the raw edges of the spine area (figure F). Score the edges of the spine with a bone folder or the back of table knife.
5. Turn the unit over and spread a thin layer of PVA glue onto the square boards, covering 1/8 inch of the black paper as well. Cover the boards with the decorative yuzen paper and smooth with fingers or a bone folder, making sure the edges are even. Turn the unit over, miter the edges and glue them to the underside of the cardboard.
6. Cut a piece of black paper 3-3/4 inches square and glue it on the inside of the back cover (figure G). Spread a layer of glue onto the backside of the frame and glue it onto the inside back cover (figure H).
7. Cut a piece of decorative paper 3-3/4 inches square and it glue onto the inside of the front cover (figure I).
8. Embellish and decorate the book box with ribbon, beads, rubber stamps or scraps of decorative paper.
Kimono pin
Materials:
2-1/4" x 8-1/2" piece of yuzen paper
1/2" x 4" piece of black Yasutomo momigami paper (#HPSE236)
1" x 2" mat board
pin back
metallic markers
glue
1. See figure J for folding instructions.
2. After folding the kimono, cover the mat board with the decorative paper and glue it to the center back of the kimono (figure K).
3. Coat the kimono with varnish.
4. Attach a pin back to the back of the kimono and let dry. Decorate the edges of the collar with metallic markers.
5. Place the finished pin inside the book gift box.
