Materials:

Friendly Plastic - royal blue metallic and cobra-patterned
E6000 glue
Rub 'n Buff - gold
seed and bugle beads
unmounted rubber stamp
1/16- inch hole punch
clear embossing ink
dragonfly charm
jewelry findings - jump rings, head pins, pin back
non-stick baking sheet or foil
oven or toaster oven
round nose and flat nose pliers
scissors

Steps:

1. Pre heat oven to 300 degrees.

2. Cut the Friendly Plastic into a 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" square, or to a desired size.

3. Put the cut piece of plastic onto the baking sheet or foil (figure A) and place it into the oven for three minutes.

4. Ink an unmounted rubber stamp with the clear embossing ink. The ink acts as a releasing agent for the rubber stamp.

5. Remove the melted plastic from the oven and place it on a flat surface.

6. Carefully center the stamp over the plastic and gently press down (figure B), leaving the stamp in place. Allow the plastic time to cool and harden. Speed up this process by immersing the stamp-covered plastic in a dish of cool water (figure C).

8. Remove the stamp and wipe the plastic clean with a damp paper towel.

9. Apply a light coating of the gold Rub 'n Buff to the raised surfaces of the plastic (figure D) using your finger.

10. Place the plastic back into the oven for 1-1/2 minutes ONLY. Watch the clock or set a timer. This sets the Rub 'n Buff and slightly raises the stamped image to give a softer look.

11. Remove the plastic from the oven and let cool.

12. Make a frame for the jewelry by cutting strips of patterned Friendly Plastic to fit around the perimeter of the piece made in the steps above. Position the strips in a frame shape (figure E) and place in the oven to soften for approximately two minutes.

13. Remove the stamped piece from the foil and position it in the center of the still-warm, softened frame (figure F). If the frame is slightly larger than the center piece, slide the center piece around to cement all sides to the frame.

14. Try these ideas to embellish (figure G):

  • Squeeze out a small amount (dime size) of glue onto the upper left-hand corner of the stamped plastic.
  • Pour the seed beads over the glue. Press the beads lightly with your finger to secure them into the glue.
  • Dip the ends of the bugle beads into the glue, then tuck them into the beads on the plastic. Angle the bugle beads so they have a chopstick look.
  • Add a dragonfly charm atop the beads.
  • Use the 1/16 inch hole punch to make holes in the plastic from which to dangle the beads.
  • Place a few seed beads onto the head pins for dangles.
  • Cut the ends of the head pins off about 3/8 of an inch above the beads. Use the round nose pliers to make a loop.
  • Attach the dangles to the plastic with the jump rings.

Marbleized Friendly Plastic Jewelry

Supplies:

Friendly Plastic in four to six coordinating colors, and gold
palette knife
T-pin or Friendly Plastic needle tool
scissors
non-stick baking sheet or foil
oven or toaster oven

Steps:

1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.

2. Cut each color of the Friendly Plastic into 1/8" and 1/4" strips, three inches long.

3. Assemble the cut strips of the Friendly Plastic onto a baking sheet or piece of foil. Placing each three-inch strip next to each other (making sure that they're touching) in a pleasing color pattern until you have a 2" x 3" rectangle .

4. Place the baking sheet or foil into the oven for three minutes or until the Friendly Plastic has melted.

5. Remove the melted plastic from the oven and place it on a flat surface. With the needle tool or a T-pin, pull through the melted plastic strips horizontally. Make the cut lines about an 1/8" apart. Do the same vertically, moving quickly so the plastic does not have time to harden (figure H).

7. Place the marbled plastic back into the oven for three minutes or until the plastic has melted enough to fill in the cut lines and has a smooth surface.

8. Remove the finished piece from the oven and let it cool. Remove the plastic form the baking sheet or the foil (figure I). With the scissors, trim all four sides of the marbled plastic.

9. From one of the two inch sides, cut off a 1/2-inch piece of the marbled plastic . Place this piece of marbled plastic on the baking sheet and put it back into the oven for two minutes. By placing the piece of marbled plastic back into the oven, the cut edges will soften and become rounded. Let the marbled plastic cool and remove it from the baking sheet.

10. Cut a 2-1/2" x 1" piece of gold Friendly Plastic. Place it on a baking sheet and into the oven for two minutes to soften.

11. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and place on a flat surface. Center and press the 1/2-inch piece of the marbled plastic into the softened piece of the gold plastic. Return the plastic to the oven for about one minute to seal the edges and secure the bond.

12. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Let the plastic cool and remove it from the baking sheet.

13. Glue on a pin back.

Tips:

  • For smooth clean marbling lines, always keep the needle tool or the T-pin clean and against the baking sheet or foil surface. Do not lift up until you have cut completely through the melted plastic.
  • To speed up the cooling process, place the plastic in cold water.
  • To remove the plastic from the baking sheet, run a palette knife under it.
  • If you want to embed an embellishment into the melted plastic, do this during step 8 before the plastic has cooled.
  • Punch holes for beading with a 1/16th inch hole punch into cooled plastic.
  • Glue on a pin back to make a brooch, or punch a hole at the center top add a jump ring to make a pendant.
  • Use the same procedure and make a matching pair of earrings.
  • To hurry the cooling process along. Place the plastic into a container of cold water.
  • To remove the plastic from the baking sheet, run a palette knife under it.
