Perfect Plastic

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-152 -- More Projects »
Friendly Plastic has gone far beyond an after school activity for kids. Guest and jewelry designer Kimberly Garringer uses the thin sticks of colorful plastic to create fabulous fashion jewelry. Kimberly demonstrates how to make leaf earrings using the product.
  1. Recycle old plastic lids by using them as pattern material. Cut out a template in the shape you want. Kim madea leaf pattern.
  2. Trace the template design on the dark side of the Friendly Plastic stick. Use a large sewing needle to etch the outline of the design onto the plastic.
  3. Use heavy duty scissors to cut out the design.
  4. Drop the cut-out into a small pot of 155 Fahrenheit water for 15 seconds. Remove the cut-out from the water, but wet all surfaces where the plastic will touch the work surface in order to keep it from sticking.
  5. Use a small utility knife to carve details into the plastic cut-outs. Mesh additional cut-outs onto the first one to create an original jewelry design. Allow the plastic pieces to cool and adhere together for a few minutes.
  6. Attach an earring back to the design, and the jewelry is ready to wear.
