In answer to a viewer's letter, Suzanne McNeill of Design Originals furnishes advice and proposes methods for producing safety pin jewelry. Here are her recommendations:
  1. Coat the outside of gold safety pins with a sealer to keep them from tarnishing.
  2. As you work, close the heads of pins to avoid losing beads.
  3. Use a jump ring to attach the pins together, and use a pair of pliers to close the ring.
  4. It is much easier to open a jump ring by twisting it to the side rather than pulling it apart.
  5. Keep in mind the variety in bead colors, styles, and patterns when considering the overall design of the jewelry.
  6. Large and small pins can be intermingled. Small pins can be inserted into the beads, and then these pins, themselves, may be strung onto the larger safety pin.
  7. To avoid the necessity for a pin backing, use a large safety pin to hold the jewelry together.
